For me, one such moment arose recently when I had to attend a developmental assessment for my daughter—a situation that required being in the same space as my ex.
Interactions with him often leave me feeling triggered and emotionally drained, so I was already bracing myself for the experience.
Knowing that I needed to shift my energy and approach this day with a sense of calm and grounding, I turned to one of my favourite self-care practices: a soothing bath.
The Birth of a Ritual
On that day, I decided to create a blend of essential oils for my bath—nothing planned or pre-measured, but chosen intuitively based on the scents and properties that called to me.
I poured the oils into the warm water, allowing the aromas to surround me, and stepped in.
As the water embraced me, I felt the stress begin to melt away.
I emerged from that bath not only feeling calm and grounded but also ready to face the day with clarity and intention.
The blend worked wonders.
I stayed centred through the appointment, even in the presence of my ex, and walked away feeling proud of how I’d maintained my sense of self.

That lingering scent sparked a thought:
How could I carry this grounding energy with me beyond the bath?

For me, it also connected this blend to my heritage, adding another layer of meaning to this ritual of self-care.
As I carefully selected each oil and butter, I reflected on its role in this universal tapestry of healing and connection.

Ingredients (200g base):

50g cocoa butter
50g mango butter
50g shea butter
25g fractionated coconut oil (for a lightweight texture)
25g grapeseed oil or avocado oil (highly moisturizing)
1 tsp vitamin E oil
Essential oil blend:
4 drops ylang-ylang
4 drops rose
4 drops cherry blossom
3 drops chamomile
3 drops lavender
2 drops gardenia
2 drops cedarwood
1 drop cinnamon bark (optional)
3 drops frankincense
Steps:
Melt the butters over a double boiler until fully combined.
Stir in the fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed/avocado oil, and vitamin E oil once the mixture has cooled slightly.
Add your essential oil blend, stirring well to ensure even distribution.
Refrigerate until semi-solid, then whip until fluffy and light.

The Body Worship Ritual: Transforming the Mundane into the Sacred
Applying lotion is something most of us do without a second thought.
It’s a quick task after a shower, a habitual motion we barely notice.
But what if this everyday act could be something more?
What if it became a moment of intentional self-care—a practice of love, gratitude, and connection with your body?
This is the essence of the body worship ritual: taking a mundane, routine activity and turning it into a sacred act of honouring yourself.
To begin, set the mood.
Find a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted.
If you’d like, dim the lights, play soft music, or simply sit in silence.
Take a few deep breaths to ground yourself and centre your mind.
Place your jar of Luminous Essence in front of you, allowing its scent and presence to prepare you for the journey ahead.
Start with clean, dry hands.
Begin at your face, gently massaging your forehead, temples, and cheeks. Let your fingers explore the contours of your face, noticing its softness, its lines, its strength.
Acknowledge the emotions your face expresses, the joy it radiates, the stories it carries.
Move your hands to the crown of your head, massaging your scalp with light, circular motions.
This is a moment to release tension, to honour the energy that flows from this space, and to ground yourself in the present.
From your head, glide your hands down to your neck and shoulders.
Massage with intention, acknowledging the strength of these parts, the way they carry the weight of your day and hold your head high.
Feel the tension dissipate under your touch as you thank these areas for all they do.
Continue to your arms.
As you massage each arm, notice its unique shape and strength. Move slowly down to your hands, pausing to interlock your fingers.
Reflect on how your hands connect you with the world, how they create, care, and comfort.
Work your way down your chest, core, and belly.
These are the centres of your breath, your emotions, and your vitality.
With each movement, offer gratitude for the life and energy held here.
As you move further down to your thighs and legs, acknowledge their power to carry you forward, step by step.
Finally, spend time massaging your feet.
Pay attention to the soles of your feet and the connection they have to the ground beneath you.
Thank them for supporting you and guiding you through the day.
As you close the ritual, place your hands over your heart.
Take three deep breaths, and as you exhale, imagine releasing any residual tension or negativity. With each inhale, invite in gratitude, connection, and self-love.
Closing the Ritual
This ritual reminds us that even the most mundane actions—like applying lotion—can become acts of self-love when done with intention.
It’s not just about nourishing your skin but about taking the time to connect with your body, honour its strength, and appreciate all it does for you.
